Mahua Moitra, a Member of Parliament with the Trinamool Congress (TMC), said she was harassed on an IndiGo domestic flight [1].
The incident highlights the increasing volatility of political tensions in India, where public confrontations involving elected officials are becoming more frequent during transit.
Moitra said that a group of passengers shouted "TMC chor" slogans at her during the flight [1]. She said the chanting was targeted harassment directed at both her person and the Trinamool Congress party [2].
Following the encounter, Moitra filed a complaint regarding the harassment [2]. She said that the situation created an environment that compromised her well-being while traveling.
"It was harassment and it affected my safety on board the flight," Moitra said [1].
IndiGo has not yet provided a public statement regarding the specific flight route or the actions taken by the crew during the incident [1]. The MP's complaint seeks to address the security breach and the conduct of the passengers involved in the chanting [2].
“"It was harassment and it affected my safety on board the flight."”
This incident reflects the deepening polarization of Indian politics, where the 'chor' (thief) narrative is frequently used by political opponents to allege corruption. When such political disputes move from rallies to confined public spaces like aircraft, it raises questions about the ability of private carriers to maintain security and neutrality in the face of partisan aggression.
