Mahua Moitra, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), called on 19 rebel party legislators to resign their seats on Friday [1].

The demand highlights deepening fractures within the TMC as members align with the opposition. This internal conflict threatens the party's stability and its democratic standing ahead of future electoral contests.

Moitra said the rebel lawmakers are "completely useless and are democratic criminals" during an interview in New Delhi [1]. She said the legislators are betraying the party's democratic principles by aligning with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which she characterized as practicing "fascist" politics [1].

Addressing the group of 19 rebel MPs [1], Moitra said, "These 19 traitors must resign and fight on a BJP ticket." She said that those shifting their loyalty should do so transparently, rather than remaining within the TMC fold while supporting an opposing ideology [1].

Despite the party instability, Moitra distanced herself from any potential shift in allegiance. She emphasized her own commitment to her current political path — a stance she framed in absolute terms.

"You can cut my head off but I’ll never join BJP," Moitra said [1].

The clash comes amid ongoing claims of a split within the TMC, as a bloc of lawmakers continues to distance themselves from the party leadership [1].

"These 19 traitors must resign and fight on a BJP ticket."

This confrontation signals a critical breakdown in discipline within the Trinamool Congress. By publicly demanding the resignation of 19 lawmakers, Moitra is attempting to force a moral and political binary: total loyalty to the TMC or an open defection to the BJP. This escalation suggests that the party may no longer be able to contain its internal dissent through private negotiation, potentially leading to a formal split that would alter the balance of power in the legislature.
