Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal and leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), said she will not resign despite a heavy election defeat.
The refusal to step down creates a potential constitutional crisis in West Bengal, as the results indicate a significant shift in the state's legislative power.
Results announced on June 2, 2024, show the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 206 seats [1] out of a total of 293 [1] in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The TMC was reduced to 81 seats [1].
During a live broadcast from Kolkata, Banerjee reacted to the loss and alleged she had been physically assaulted. She said, "मेरे पेट पर लात मारी गई..मैं इस्तीफा नहीं दूंगी" (I was kicked in the stomach... I will not resign).
The statement came as the BJP secured a commanding majority in the assembly. The loss for the TMC represents a sharp decline in the party's influence within the state legislature, a result that typically leads to a change in leadership.
Banerjee's assertion that she would remain in office despite the numerical loss of the majority has drawn attention to the stability of the regional government. The BJP candidate maintained a lead over the Chief Minister in Bhabanipur as the final rounds of counting concluded.
“"I was kicked in the stomach... I will not resign."”
The refusal of a Chief Minister to resign after losing a legislative majority challenges the standard parliamentary conventions of India. With the BJP holding a clear majority of 206 seats, the state faces a period of political instability unless a formal transition of power occurs.
