The Toronto Maple Leafs hired Jim Hiller as their new head coach on Thursday.

The appointment marks a significant leadership change for the franchise as it enters the pre-draft period, signaling a shift in the team's tactical direction.

General Manager John Chayka introduced Hiller during a Zoom media availability held at the Ford Performance Centre in Toronto. Chayka said Hiller was chosen for his experience, leadership, communication skills, and vision for building a winning team.

"He consistently distinguished himself with his experience, with his leadership, his ability to communicate and connect with people and his vision for what it takes to build a winning team," Chayka said.

Hiller is returning to a familiar environment. He previously served as an assistant coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2015 to 2019 [2].

"I’m excited to be back and it’s an easy transition," Hiller said.

Beyond his time in Toronto, Hiller brings a proven track record from the Western Conference. During parts of three seasons as the head coach of the Los Angeles Kings, he posted a record of 93-58-24 [1].

The hiring comes as the team prepares for the upcoming draft, with the organization focusing on stability and experienced leadership behind the bench to guide the roster.

"I’m excited to be back and it’s an easy transition."

By hiring a former assistant who understands the organization's internal culture and has a winning record as a head coach in Los Angeles, the Maple Leafs are prioritizing a low-risk transition. Hiller's familiarity with the franchise combined with his recent head-coaching experience suggests the team is seeking a balance of continuity and professional authority to stabilize the locker room.
