The Policía Metropolitana de Medellín dismantled an extortion network that targeted merchants operating within the Graffiti Tour in Comuna 13 [1].
This operation targets the security of one of Medellín's most visited tourist corridors. By removing a group that posed as a major criminal organization, police said they aim to stabilize the local economy and protect the livelihoods of small business owners in the district.
Officers arrested three men [2], including the alleged ringleader known as alias Sebas. The arrests took place at a farm located in Sopetrán, Antioquia [1]. Two of the detained individuals are 27 and 28 [3].
According to investigators, the group targeted merchants by demanding payments of up to 600 million pesos [3]. To intimidate their victims into paying, the suspects pretended to be members of the Clan del Golfo [3].
The police said they seized weapons and cash during the operation. The network focused its activities on the Graffiti Tour, a high-traffic area known for its street art and tourism [1].
While some reports mentioned other areas of the city, the primary focus of the investigation centered on the Comuna 13 district [1]. The suspects now face legal proceedings regarding the extortion of local business owners.
“The suspects pretended to be members of the Clan del Golfo”
The use of 'brand identity' from larger cartels like the Clan del Golfo is a common tactic for small-scale gangs to amplify their perceived power and coerce victims. This operation highlights the ongoing struggle to secure Medellín's tourist hubs from localized extortion rings that exploit the visibility of the Graffiti Tour to target vulnerable entrepreneurs.
