Mercedes-Benz launched the facelifted 2026 S-Class in India on June 15, 2026 [1], introducing its first plug-in hybrid powertrain for the flagship sedan.
The move signals a shift in the Indian luxury car market toward electrified high-end vehicles. By introducing the S 450 e Launch Edition, the manufacturer aims to compete with the BMW 7-Series while expanding its electrified luxury portfolio.
The new plug-in hybrid S-Class is priced between ₹2.20 crore and ₹2.38 crore [2], [3]. The S 450 e Launch Edition offers an electric-only range of approximately 100 km [4].
Bookings for the vehicle began on the launch day. Mercedes-Benz scheduled deliveries for the fourth quarter of 2026, coinciding with the Diwali period [5].
Santosh Iyer, MD and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, said the company's current market position. "The only luxury brand that grew in Q1 was Mercedes," Iyer said [6].
The launch is part of a broader strategic effort to support the company's "Make in India" localization plan. Mercedes-Benz is targeting full localization of the S-Class by 2027 [4]. This initiative is intended to reduce reliance on imports, and optimize the supply chain for the Indian market.
The 2026 facelift includes updated styling and enhanced technology to maintain the S-Class's position as a benchmark for luxury sedans. The integration of the plug-in hybrid system allows owners to utilize electric power for urban commutes while retaining the range of a combustion engine for longer trips.
“The only luxury brand that grew in Q1 was Mercedes.”
The introduction of a plug-in hybrid S-Class reflects a transition period for the Indian luxury market, where consumers are moving toward electrification but still require the versatility of hybrid systems. By pairing this launch with a 2027 full localization goal, Mercedes-Benz is attempting to hedge against import taxes and volatile shipping costs while securing a first-mover advantage in the plug-in hybrid luxury segment.
