Meta is developing a standalone prediction-markets application called Arena to compete with existing platforms such as Polymarket and Kalshi.
The move represents a significant threat to niche prediction markets because Meta can integrate the tool into its existing social ecosystem. By leveraging its global reach, the company could rapidly scale a product that currently relies on smaller, specialized user bases.
Reports indicate the app may function as a clone of Polymarket but without the use of real money, instead utilizing a points-based system. However, other reports suggest the platform could bring betting to as many as three billion users [1].
Phil Rosen, the co-founder and CEO of Opening Bell Media, said that if Meta implemented the strategy correctly, they would destroy Polymarket and Kalshi because Meta possesses the distribution.
Mark Zuckerberg reportedly wants a version of the prediction market that removes the real-money element in favor of the points system. This approach would allow Meta to gamify predictions across its platforms while avoiding some of the regulatory hurdles associated with traditional gambling and financial wagering.
The development of Arena is centered at Meta's headquarters in Menlo Park, California. The project aims to capitalize on the growing trend of users betting on political and cultural outcomes, a trend that has seen a surge in popularity across independent platforms this year.
“"If Meta did it the right way, they would destroy Polymarket and Kalshi because Meta just has the distribution."”
Meta's entry into prediction markets signals a shift from financial speculation to social gamification. By potentially using a points-based system rather than currency, Meta can bypass the strict legal frameworks governing betting while still capturing the data and engagement that make prediction markets valuable. If successful, the sheer scale of Meta's distribution could marginalize specialized platforms that lack the integrated social network required to attract billions of casual users.
