Drivers in the State of Mexico continue to invade the exclusive Mexibús lane despite the installation of a costly automated fine system.
The persistent violations highlight a failure in deterrence and a lack of respect for transit regulations in a region struggling with congestion. When exclusive lanes are ignored, the efficiency of the entire mass transit system decreases, affecting thousands of daily commuters.
The government invested 707 million pesos [1] into the installation of "fotomultas," automated cameras designed to detect and fine vehicles that illegally enter the reserved lane. Despite this expenditure, the cameras have not stopped the influx of unauthorized vehicles.
Reports indicate that the lane is frequently used by a variety of vehicles, including tankers, combis, and private cars [1]. The disregard for the law extends to government employees as well. At least six officials from the Mexico City Attorney General's Office (Fiscalía de la CDMX) have been fined for using the exclusive lane [2].
The presence of the cameras was intended to automate enforcement and reduce the need for physical police presence. However, the continued invasion of the lane suggests that the threat of a fine is insufficient to change driver behavior in the State of Mexico.
This trend of non-compliance persists regardless of the vehicle type or the status of the driver. The system was designed to ensure the Mexibús could maintain its schedule by keeping the path clear, but the current reality is a shared space between public transit and illegal private traffic [1].
“The government invested 707 million pesos into the installation of automated cameras.”
The failure of the Mexibús camera system suggests that high-cost technological solutions are ineffective without strong cultural compliance or aggressive enforcement. When high-ranking officials, such as those from the Fiscalía, ignore the rules, it creates a perception of impunity that encourages other drivers to disregard the law, effectively neutralizing the investment in transit infrastructure.
