Micron Technology has begun producing 1-alpha DRAM at its manufacturing facility in Manassas, Virginia [1].
This move aims to strengthen the domestic memory supply chain for critical industries. By increasing local production, the company intends to ease ongoing DDR4 shortages that affect the aerospace, defense, and automotive sectors [2, 4].
The company invested $2 billion in the expansion of the Manassas fab [1]. This investment has quadrupled the facility's DDR4 wafer output [1]. Micron said the project creates more than 3,100 direct manufacturing and community jobs [4].
A Micron spokesperson said, "1-alpha DRAM is the most advanced memory ever produced in the United States" [1]. The expansion is part of a broader U.S. investment plan totaling $200 billion [4].
In a press release, Micron said the facility is "supporting American memory production for critical industries including automotive, defense, and aerospace" [2].
Despite the launch of the advanced production line, Micron stock price dipped one% following the announcement [3]. However, BofA has maintained a price target of $950 for the company [3].
“"1-alpha DRAM is the most advanced memory ever produced in the United States."”
The shift toward domestic 1-alpha DRAM production reduces reliance on overseas semiconductor fabrication for high-reliability components. By targeting the defense and automotive sectors, Micron is aligning its manufacturing capacity with national security interests and the specific technical requirements of industrial hardware, which often rely on DDR4 standards longer than consumer electronics.
