Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) third consecutive victory in the Assam Legislative Assembly elections in April 2026.
The result solidifies the party's dominance in northeast India and provides a mandate for the government to continue its specific development agenda in the region.
The BJP won 81 of 126 seats [1], granting the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) a three-fourths majority in the assembly [2]. This outcome represents a significant hold on power for the party, which has now secured three straight terms in the state.
Modi said the result reflects a strong vote of trust from the people of Assam. He pledged that the government would continue to prioritize the transformation and development of the state.
"I thank the people of Assam for their trust and assure them of continued development and transformation," Modi said.
In additional remarks, the Prime Minister acknowledged the effort of those who campaigned for the party. "I thank the voters and party workers for their support in Assam," Modi said.
The victory in Assam comes as part of a broader electoral cycle for the BJP, which also hailed wins in West Bengal during the same period. The party intends to use its legislative strength to push forward state-level policies aimed at economic growth, and infrastructure.
“The BJP won 81 of 126 seats in the Assam Legislative Assembly.”
The BJP's third consecutive victory and the resulting three-fourths majority indicate a deeply entrenched electoral stronghold in Assam. By securing 81 seats, the party has minimized legislative friction, allowing for a more aggressive implementation of its development and transformation goals without significant opposition hurdles in the assembly.
