Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the BJP's historic victory in the West Bengal and Assam assembly elections during a speech in New Delhi on Monday.
These results mark a significant shift in the political landscape of eastern India, strengthening the BJP's regional influence and providing a mandate for the government's legislative agenda.
Speaking at the BJP headquarters around 5 p.m. local time, Modi addressed party workers following the announcement of the results. He said the outcome was a reflection of the people's trust in the party's vision for West Bengal and Assam. "People’s power has prevailed," Modi said.
The Prime Minister emphasized the scale of the win, stating, "This is a historic victory for the nation." He used the platform to outline upcoming government priorities, focusing on security and immigration. Modi said, "We will take strict action against ‘ghuspaithiyas’."
Specific electoral gains were highlighted during the victory celebrations. In West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari won the Bhabanipur constituency by over 15,000 votes [1]. This specific win served as a focal point for party supporters gathering at the New Delhi headquarters.
Modi credited the party's grassroots workers, known as karyakartas, for the sweeping mandate. He said the victory in West Bengal specifically demonstrates a shift in the state's political trajectory. The Prime Minister indicated that the government would now move forward with its planned initiatives for the region, leveraging the new electoral support to implement policy changes.
“"People’s power has prevailed."”
The BJP's success in West Bengal and Assam suggests a consolidation of power in the east, potentially weakening the opposition's hold on historically difficult strongholds. By securing a mandate in West Bengal, the party can now more aggressively pursue its national security and immigration policies in border states.
