Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a sweeping mandate in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections on Sunday.

The victory represents a significant political shift in a state long dominated by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and its leader Mamata Banerjee. This result alters the regional power balance and strengthens the BJP's influence in eastern India.

Speaking from the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, Modi addressed party workers and celebrated the outcome. He said that the party has crossed the 200-seat mark [1], which is well past the halfway point for a majority in the assembly.

Modi described the win as a reflection of public trust in the party's vision for the state. He said, "People's power has prevailed."

During the address, the Prime Minister outlined future governance priorities for the region. He specifically identified economic challenges as a primary focus for the new administration. "We will address the issue of unemployment in West Bengal," Modi said.

The victory follows a high-stakes campaign involving BJP strategist Amit Shah and other party leaders. The result marks a historic turning point for the party's presence in the state's legislative body.

Modi urged the public to maintain their trust in the party as it prepares to take over the administration of West Bengal. He said that the verdict reflects a desire for change in the state's political landscape.

"People's power has prevailed."

The BJP's acquisition of over 200 seats in West Bengal breaks the long-standing stronghold of the Trinamool Congress. This shift suggests a realignment of the electorate in the state and provides the BJP with a powerful mandate to implement its national policy agenda at the state level, particularly regarding employment and economic reform.
