Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a five-nation diplomatic tour today to strengthen India’s strategic partnerships in trade, technology, and energy [1].
This diplomatic push signals India's intent to diversify its economic dependencies and secure critical technology transfers from Europe and the Gulf. By targeting a mix of energy-rich and tech-forward nations, New Delhi aims to bolster its domestic infrastructure and global standing.
The tour, which runs from May 15 to May 20, 2024 [1], includes visits to the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy [2]. A spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs said the five-nation tour will focus on enhancing trade, technology, and energy collaboration with partners in the Gulf and Europe [3].
These visits follow recent high-level engagements, including meetings with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung. During those discussions, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said the talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi will further deepen the strategic partnership between India and South Korea [4].
Modi previously emphasized the importance of these bilateral bonds. "We warmly welcome President Lee Jae-myung and look forward to strengthening our bilateral cooperation," Modi said [5].
The itinerary focuses on specific regional strengths — the UAE for energy and investment, and the European nations for sustainable technology and industrial innovation. The Prime Minister is accompanied by senior officials, including Jaishankar, to finalize agreements that align with India's long-term strategic goals [1].
“The five-nation tour will focus on enhancing trade, technology and energy collaboration.”
This tour represents a coordinated effort by India to balance its strategic interests across different geopolitical blocs. By simultaneously engaging with the Gulf and Europe, India is positioning itself as a central hub for trade and a reliable partner for technology sharing, reducing reliance on any single global power while securing energy needs.
