Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the BJP’s victories in West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry on Monday, calling the results historic and unprecedented [1, 2].

The outcome represents a significant political shift in Eastern India, particularly in West Bengal, where the party has dramatically increased its presence compared to previous cycles.

Speaking at a celebratory gathering at the BJP headquarters in Delhi, Modi said he bows to the people of West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry [3, 4]. He said that the mandate validates the party’s focus on good governance and development of Eastern India [5, 6].

In West Bengal, the party's performance showed a sharp increase from the 77 seats held in the 2021 assembly [7]. As of 6 p.m. on the day of the results, the BJP was leading in 205 seats out of 294 in the state [7]. Individual results also showed strong margins, such as Suvendu Adhikari winning the Bhabanipur seat by more than 15,000 votes [8].

Despite the sweeping gains, some electoral processes remain unfinished. Repolling has been ordered in the Falta constituency, which is scheduled to take place on May 21, 2026 [9].

"The day is historic, unprecedented," Modi said [10]. He said that the victory belongs to the voters who sought a change in leadership and administration [11].

"The day is historic, unprecedented."

The surge from 77 seats in 2021 to a leading position in 205 seats in West Bengal indicates a collapse of the previous political hegemony in the state. By securing victories across West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry, the BJP has consolidated its influence in the east, potentially altering the regional balance of power and providing the party with a stronger mandate to implement its development agenda in Eastern India.
