Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India's first hydrogen-powered train in Jind, Haryana, on Friday [1].

The launch marks a significant shift toward sustainable transport and infrastructure modernization in northern India. These investments arrive as the Bharatiya Janata Party increases its development push ahead of upcoming elections in Punjab [2].

Accompanied by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones for several projects at the Jind railway station [1]. The hydrogen-powered train will operate between Jind and Sonipat [3].

In Jind alone, the Prime Minister unveiled development projects worth approximately Rs 14,700 crore [4]. These local initiatives are part of a broader regional investment strategy. Across Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab, the total value of the projects unveiled by the Prime Minister is around Rs 26,800 crore [5].

The infrastructure push focuses heavily on reducing travel times for commuters. New developments have reduced the travel time from Delhi to Katra to six hours [6]. Additionally, the commute between Jind and Gohana has been reduced to 40 minutes [7].

Modi said the projects are designed to boost connectivity and economic growth in the region [2]. The introduction of hydrogen technology in the rail sector is intended to lower carbon emissions while increasing the efficiency of the national transport network.

India's first hydrogen-powered train will operate between Jind and Sonipat.

The deployment of hydrogen-powered rail technology signals India's intent to diversify its energy sources and meet climate goals by reducing reliance on diesel and electric grids. By clustering these high-value infrastructure launches in Haryana and Punjab, the administration is linking technological progress with regional economic stability, likely to strengthen the BJP's positioning before the next electoral cycle in Punjab.
