Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared Nepal a "priority partner" during a meeting with Rabi Lamichhane, chairman of Nepal's Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).
The meeting underscores India's strategic interest in maintaining stable relations with the new Nepali government to ensure regional security and economic integration.
The two leaders met June 3, 2024 [1], at the Prime Minister's Office in Delhi. During the discussions, Modi said the shared civilizational bonds and the need for enhanced cooperation between the two neighbors are important.
Modi said that India looks forward to collaborating with the new government in Nepal [3]. The discussions focused on developing digital corridors and establishing seamless connectivity to facilitate trade and movement across borders.
Lamichhane highlighted the potential for a modernized relationship based on mutual growth. "By focusing on shared civilizational bonds, digital corridors, and seamless connectivity, we can truly build a partnership defined by progress and mutual trust," Lamichhane said [2].
The meeting occurred as both nations seek to strengthen bilateral ties and promote connectivity under the current administrative framework in Nepal. The RSP chief's visit to the capital serves as a diplomatic bridge to align the interests of the new government with India's regional priorities.
“"Nepal is a priority partner for India."”
This engagement signals India's intent to proactively secure its relationship with Nepal's shifting political landscape. By prioritizing 'digital corridors' and 'seamless connectivity,' New Delhi is moving beyond traditional security concerns toward a framework of economic interdependence, aiming to counter regional influence from other global powers.
