Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Seychelles National Day in Victoria as the guest of honour this week.
The visit underscores India's strategic focus on the Indian Ocean region through its Mahasagar vision. By strengthening maritime security and defense ties, India aims to solidify its role as a primary security partner for island nations in the region.
The visit marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles [1]. During the three-day state visit [2], the prime minister participated in ceremonies celebrating the nation's milestone anniversary.
As part of the defense cooperation, India handed over a made-in-India patrol vessel [4] and other equipment to the Seychelles government. This transfer of hardware is intended to enhance the maritime surveillance and policing capabilities of the island nation.
The celebrations also featured a visible display of military cooperation. An Indian Army contingent marched during the National Day ceremony [3], a gesture reflecting the deep security bonds between the two countries.
India and Seychelles have focused on expanding cooperation in trade and defense to ensure stability in the Indian Ocean. The presence of the prime minister as the chief guest highlights the priority New Delhi places on these bilateral ties as they enter a new decade of partnership.
“India marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles.”
This visit signals India's intent to counter competing influence in the Indian Ocean by providing tangible security assets and high-level diplomatic recognition. By linking the Golden Jubilee with the delivery of naval hardware, India reinforces its 'Mahasagar' vision, positioning itself as a net security provider for smaller littoral states.
