Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is calling for a massive scale-up of medical resources to contain a rapidly spreading Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The urgency stems from the speed of the transmission, which MSF describes as the fastest-growing outbreak on record. If containment efforts do not expand, the virus threatens to overwhelm local health infrastructure in eastern DRC.

The outbreak is centered in the Ituri province, specifically impacting the Bunia General Hospital and its associated Ebola Treatment Centre [2, 3]. The charity issued initial warnings in mid-July 2026, with further reports on the deteriorating situation following on July 22 [2, 3].

Data regarding the scale of the crisis varies across reports. Some sources indicate the outbreak is nearing 2,000 cases [2], while other reports suggest nearly 5,000 cases have been recorded [1]. This discrepancy highlights the difficulty of tracking the virus in volatile regions.
