Muhyiddin Yassin, the Bersatu chief and former Malaysian prime minister, said PAS failed to revive political cooperation with UMNO ahead of the Johor state election.
The collapse of these negotiations signals deepening instability within the Perikatan Nasional coalition, which relies on the cooperation of Malaysia's two largest Malay-Muslim parties [1]. A failure to coordinate seats often leads to split votes, potentially weakening the coalition's influence in the Johor region.
This political friction follows a volatile period for the alliance. PAS severed ties with Bersatu in June 2026 [1], creating a rift that has complicated the lead-up to the polls. Muhyiddin said, "PAS has failed in its bid to revive political cooperation with UMNO."
Despite the Bersatu chief's statements, other reports suggest a different dynamic. Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said there is a secret pact between UMNO and PAS for the election. This contradiction highlights the opacity of current negotiations between the parties as they vie for dominance in the state.
Meanwhile, the Perikatan Nasional coalition is adjusting its strategy for the upcoming vote. Sanusi Nor, the PN election director, said Bersatu will contest the largest number of seats among Perikatan Nasional parties in the Johor polls. This move suggests Bersatu is preparing to lead the charge in the region regardless of whether PAS and UMNO reach a private understanding.
The lack of a formal quid-pro-quo on seat-sharing means candidates from these parties may run against one another, a scenario that typically benefits opposing coalitions by dividing the Malay-Muslim electorate.
“"PAS has failed in its bid to revive political cooperation with UMNO."”
The inability of PAS and UMNO to form a public alliance, coupled with the severance of ties between PAS and Bersatu, suggests a fragmentation of the Malay-Muslim political bloc. If these parties cannot synchronize their candidate lists, the resulting vote splitting could significantly diminish their collective power in the Johor state election and weaken the overall stability of the Perikatan Nasional coalition.
