Mahanagar Gas Limited raised the retail price of compressed natural gas by ₹2 per kilogram in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region [1].
The price increase affects thousands of commuters and commercial vehicle operators in Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai who rely on the state-run distributor for fuel.
The new retail price for CNG is now ₹86 per kilogram [1]. This adjustment follows a previous price increase of ₹2 per kilogram that occurred on May 14, 2024 [2].
Mahanagar Gas Limited said the price revision was necessary due to rising procurement costs for natural gas [3]. The company serves as the primary gas distributor for the metropolitan area, managing the infrastructure that delivers fuel to both domestic and commercial users.
This latest hike marks the second time within a single month that residents of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region have seen an increase in fuel costs. The cumulative effect of these adjustments reflects the volatility of natural gas procurement prices on the market.
Local transport operators, including auto-rickshaws and taxis, typically feel the immediate impact of such revisions. Because the state-run distributor controls the supply for the region, consumers have few alternatives for fueling their CNG-powered vehicles.
“The new retail price for CNG is now ₹86 per kilogram.”
The repeated price hikes in May 2024 indicate that MGL is passing increased upstream procurement costs directly to the consumer. For the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, this creates a ripple effect where transportation costs for public transit and logistics may rise, potentially influencing the cost of goods and services across the city.
