Elon Musk said SpaceX intends to use humanoid robots to build factories and large-scale infrastructure on the lunar surface [1].
This vision represents a shift toward an off-world economy, moving beyond simple exploration toward permanent industrialization and autonomous manufacturing in space [1, 3].
Musk said these plans during SpaceX's first quarterly earnings call on Aug. 4, 2024 [2]. He described a system where robots would mine regolith, the layer of loose rocky material covering bedrock, to provide the raw materials for construction [1, 3].
Once established, these lunar factories would produce AI-compute satellites [1, 3]. Musk also proposed the use of a lunar mass driver, a device designed to launch cargo from the Moon's surface into space [3].
Musk acknowledged the ambitious nature of the project. "I know this sounds totally nuts," he said [3]. Despite the scale of the undertaking, he said the transition to lunar industry is inevitable. "It's going to happen," he said [2].
The objective is to expand industrial capacity beyond Earth to dramatically increase the scale of the global economy [1, 3]. By utilizing autonomous robots for the initial build, SpaceX aims to establish launch capabilities and manufacturing hubs without requiring a permanent human workforce on the surface during the early phases [1, 3].

The proposal to move AI compute and satellite manufacturing to the Moon suggests a long-term strategy to bypass Earth's deep gravity well, which makes launching heavy equipment expensive. If SpaceX can successfully implement autonomous mining and mass drivers, it would fundamentally change the economics of space travel by creating a sustainable supply chain of materials and hardware outside of Earth's atmosphere.
