A former passenger of the cruise ship MV Hondius says safety measures were implemented too late during a hantavirus outbreak at sea [1].
The incident raises concerns about maritime health protocols and the transparency of cruise operators when managing infectious diseases in confined environments.
Turkish internet blogger Runi Cenet said that while safety precautions were eventually introduced, they did not arrive in time to prevent significant risk. "These kind of cautions are taking place, but they are late," Cenet said. "So, I wish that we were quicker to respond" [1].
Controversy surrounded the initial fatality on the vessel. According to reports, the ship's captain told passengers that the first person who died had died from natural causes and that there was no contagious disease onboard [2]. However, other reports indicate the ship was experiencing a hantavirus outbreak during that period, suggesting a contradiction in how the death was communicated to those on board [1, 2].
Cenet said that the response was insufficient and that an open buffet continued to operate despite the health risks [2]. Other travel vloggers said that travelers were not well informed following the first death [3].
Cenet left the ship on April 24 [1]. At the time of departure, 28 other passengers left the vessel with the blogger [1].
The hantavirus is typically transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents. In a cruise ship setting, the persistence of shared dining areas and delayed medical alerts can increase the potential for exposure among passengers, and crew.
“"These kind of cautions are taking place, but they are late."”
This incident highlights a critical tension between cruise operators' desire to prevent passenger panic and the necessity of transparent health reporting. When a captain attributes a death to natural causes during an active outbreak, it may delay individual preventative actions and complicate the medical history of those exposed, potentially increasing the legal and public health liability for the cruise line.
