Passengers from the MV Hondius cruise ship are in strict isolation across three countries following a hantavirus outbreak off Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands.
The incident highlights the rapid international spread of rare pathogens in the cruise industry, triggering high-level government interventions and federal quarantine measures to prevent a wider public health crisis.
Evacuations began early Sunday morning, May 9, 2026 [5], and continued into the following day. The ship remained anchored off the coast as authorities coordinated the removal of suspected and confirmed cases. French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said, "All five evacuated have been immediately placed in strict isolation until further notice" [1].
In the U.S., 17 American passengers [2] were flown to a federal quarantine facility in Nebraska. A CDC spokesperson said the agency will monitor these passengers for 45 days [4] after their arrival. The strict window is intended to ensure no new cases emerge from the exposed group.
Similar measures were implemented in the United Kingdom. A British Health Authority representative said 20 Britons [3] will self-isolate for 45 days [4] at Arrow in the UK. These coordinated efforts across different capitals aim to contain the deadly virus, which is often transmitted through rodent droppings, before it can enter the general population.
French authorities have also placed five evacuated passengers [1] in strict isolation. The multi-national response reflects the severity of the virus and the complexity of managing health risks on international voyages.
“All five evacuated have been immediately placed in strict isolation until further notice.”
The use of a federal quarantine facility in the U.S. and strict 45-day isolation periods in Europe indicates a high level of concern regarding the virulence of this specific hantavirus strain. Because hantavirus is typically associated with rural environments rather than maritime settings, this outbreak suggests a breakdown in ship sanitation or an unusual exposure event during the cruise.
