Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the new railway line project between Nagapattinam and Thiruthuraipoondi in Tamil Nadu is currently progressing apace.

The project aims to improve regional transportation and connectivity, reducing travel times and enhancing economic movement between these two hubs in Tamil Nadu.

Vaishnaw said that the project has seen significant land acquisition and bridge construction completed [1]. The infrastructure development is part of a broader effort to modernize the rail network in the region, ensuring more reliable transit for local residents.

Regarding land requirements, Vaishnaw said that about 108 hectares [1] out of the required 120 hectares [1] of land had been acquired for the project. This indicates that the vast majority of the necessary territory is now under government control, removing one of the primary hurdles often associated with large-scale infrastructure projects in India.

The planned route will include four stations [1] to serve the populations along the corridor. These stations are intended to facilitate easier access for commuters and freight services, integrating the coastal and inland regions more effectively.

The minister's update highlights the completion of critical bridge work, which is essential for crossing local waterways and ensuring the line's stability. The continued momentum on these structural elements suggests the project is moving toward its final phases of implementation.

The near-completion of land acquisition—reaching 90% of the target—significantly lowers the risk of legal delays or protests that typically stall Indian infrastructure projects.
