NASA has invited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to join its Moon Base programme under the Artemis framework [1].

The invitation was extended during the nine [1] India-US Civil Space Joint Working Group meeting. The discussions took place on Aug. 5-6, 2024 [1], at the ISRO headquarters in Bengaluru, India [1].
Officials said the move is designed to deepen the human-spaceflight partnership between the two agencies [2]. The collaboration operates under the Artemis Accords, a set of principles intended to guide sustainable and peaceful space exploration [3]. India has already joined the Artemis Accords [3], providing the diplomatic and legal foundation for this specific invitation to the Moon Base programme.
The Artemis framework seeks to return humans to the Moon and eventually prepare for missions to Mars. By inviting ISRO, NASA leverages India's growing capabilities in low-cost, high-efficiency space missions, a strength ISRO has demonstrated through previous lunar and planetary probes.
The partnership focuses on civil space cooperation, ensuring that the development of lunar infrastructure remains a collaborative international effort [2]. The two agencies will continue to coordinate their efforts through the Joint Working Group to define the specific roles, and contributions India will bring to the lunar base project.
