NASA launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope from Florida on Sunday aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
The mission represents a significant leap in astronomical capability by providing a wide-field view of the cosmos. This allows scientists to observe vast areas of space simultaneously, whereas previous instruments often focused on narrow targets.
The telescope is designed to create a comprehensive map of the universe. Its primary objectives include studying the mysterious nature of dark matter and dark energy, forces that shape the expansion and structure of the cosmos [1, 5]. Additionally, the observatory will search for exoplanets to better understand the prevalence of planetary systems beyond our own [1, 5].
To achieve its goals, the telescope will travel to an observation point located 1.6 million km [4] from Earth. From this vantage point, the instrument is capable of surveying hundreds of millions of stars and billions of galaxies [3].
The launch took place at Cape Canaveral/Kennedy Space Center in the U.S. [2, 3]. The program involved a significant financial investment, with costs cited at six trillion South Korean won [4].
NASA officials said the Roman Space Telescope will complement other observatories by providing the broad context needed to identify rare cosmic objects. Once these objects are found, other telescopes can then be used to study them in greater detail.
