NASA and private firm Katalyst Space called off a mission to rescue the Swift Observatory on Wednesday, Aug. 21 [1].
The failure leaves the aging telescope in a decaying orbit, threatening the long-term viability of a facility estimated to be worth $500 million [4].
The mission, which launched in early July [5], aimed to move the observatory from its current altitude of approximately 347 km (216 mi) to a higher orbit of roughly 600 km (373 mi) [3, 5]. This boost would have extended the telescope's operational life by preventing it from prematurely re-entering the atmosphere.
Technical failures aboard the rescue spacecraft made the operation impossible. The craft experienced electrical and technical issues that hindered its ability to grapple and control the telescope [2, 6].
"We have encountered an irredeemable technical issue that prevents us from completing the mission," a Katalyst Space spokesperson said [1].
A NASA spokesperson said the rescue spacecraft could not be easily controlled, which forced the decision to abandon the boost [2]. The failed operation cost $30 million [6].
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said he was disappointed over the outcome but noted that the agency will continue to monitor the health of the observatory [1].
While some reports suggest the telescope is now doomed to burn up upon re-entry, other assessments indicate that the specific timeline for its descent is still being evaluated [4, 7].
