The NBA announced the group assignments for the 2026 Emirates NBA Cup on June 30 [4].
The in-season tournament aims to increase fan engagement and add competitive stakes to the regular season schedule. By introducing a tournament format, the league seeks to provide more meaningful games before the traditional playoffs begin.
All 30 NBA teams will participate in the event [1]. The league has organized the teams into three groups per conference [2], with each group consisting of five teams [3]. The group-play games for this iteration of the cup will take place in the United Arab Emirates.
"The Emirates NBA Cup will showcase the best of the league in a new competitive format and give fans more meaningful games throughout the season," Adam Silver said.
In the Eastern Conference, the Detroit Pistons were placed in Group A. The Pistons are scheduled to open their tournament play against the Miami Heat, which will mark the start of the Eastern Conference portion of the event, an NBA spokesperson said.
The tournament structure separates the Eastern and Western conferences into their own respective brackets. This ensures a balanced distribution of competition across the league's two halves while maintaining the high-stakes environment of a knockout-style progression following the group stages.
“All 30 NBA teams will participate in the event”
The decision to host group-play games in the United Arab Emirates signals the NBA's continued strategy of international expansion. By pairing a high-stakes in-season tournament with a global venue, the league is attempting to monetize the regular season while growing its brand footprint in the Middle East.
