The National Conference party has announced a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to demand the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood.
The demonstration seeks to pressure the central government to reverse the 2019 decision to revoke the region's statehood. This move represents a coordinated effort to build a multi-party coalition against the current administrative status of the territory.
Farooq Abdullah, a leader of the National Conference, said he has invited 52 national and regional leaders to join the event [1]. These invitees include members of the Congress party, and religious figure Mirwaiz. The goal is to present a united front across party lines to advocate for the region's political rights.
"I have invited 52 national and regional leaders to join us in demanding the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir," Abdullah said [1]. He said the restoration of statehood is a constitutional right that the party will fight for [3].
While the invitations have been extended, the party is still seeking official clearance for the event. Omar Abdullah said the party is awaiting a nod for the protest, which is scheduled for July 20, 2024 [2].
Jantar Mantar is a frequent site for political demonstrations in the capital. The National Conference is utilizing the space to elevate the issue of Jammu and Kashmir's status to a national audience by involving leaders from various political backgrounds.
“"The restoration of statehood is a constitutional right that we will fight for,"”
The National Conference is attempting to transform a regional grievance into a national political issue by recruiting a broad spectrum of allies. By inviting diverse leaders—from the Congress party to religious figures—the party aims to demonstrate that the demand for Jammu and Kashmir's statehood has support beyond its own immediate voter base, potentially complicating the central government's narrative regarding the 2019 reorganization.
