Candidates of the NEET-UG 2026 exam are seeking the return of their registration fees after the test was cancelled due to paper leaks.
The cancellation has left thousands of medical aspirants in a state of uncertainty regarding their academic timeline and financial recovery. The dispute centers on whether the National Testing Agency (NTA) will initiate refunds automatically or require students to apply for them.
The NEET-UG 2026 exam took place on May 3, 2026 [1]. However, the NTA announced the cancellation of the exam on May 4, 2026 [2], after receiving credible allegations that the question paper had been leaked.
Political pressure has mounted in New Delhi as representatives demand accountability from the government. An Indian Youth Congress (IYC) spokesperson said, "We demand a prompt refund of the exam fee to all candidates who were affected by the cancellation" [3].
Congress MP Manickam Tagore also called for immediate action from the administration. Tagore said the Union Education Minister must take responsibility and ensure that the fee refund process is initiated without delay [4].
There is currently conflicting information regarding the refund mechanism. The NTA said refunds will be processed automatically to the bank accounts used for payment [5]. Conversely, the Indian Youth Congress has urged candidates to submit formal requests for their fee refunds [3].
This discrepancy has caused confusion among students who are already dealing with the stress of a cancelled nationwide examination. No official deadline for the completion of all refunds has been announced by the Ministry of Education.
“The National Testing Agency (NTA) has cancelled the NEET‑UG 2026 exam citing a paper‑leak allegation.”
The confusion over refund procedures highlights a communication gap between the NTA and the public during a high-stakes crisis. Because the NEET exam is a primary gateway to medical education in India, the administrative failure to provide a clear, unified path for financial restitution exacerbates the distrust caused by the initial security breach.
