A catastrophic flash flood struck the border between Nepal and China’s Tibet autonomous region on Wednesday, killing at least 160 people [3].
The disaster occurred during a peak travel period, leaving hundreds of international tourists and local residents missing in a remote, high-altitude region where rescue access is limited.
Heavy monsoon rains triggered the event, which was compounded by a landslide and avalanche of mud, water, ice, and rocks [3]. Some reports indicate a seismic earthquake may have also triggered the flooding [2]. Recovery efforts are ongoing, with 157 bodies already recovered [4].
While some early reports listed 98 deaths [5], other sources place the toll at 160 [3]. Search and rescue teams are currently scouring the debris for survivors.
"Search operations will continue into the night," said a spokesperson for Nepal’s Prime Minister’s Office.
The disaster has heavily impacted foreign nationals. Reports on the number of missing U.S. citizens vary, with figures ranging from 47 [5] to at least 54 [2]. Additionally, 33 British tourists are reported missing [7].
Overall estimates for missing tourists range from 384 [7] to over 400 [4]. Among the missing are approximately 340 foreign tourists [4] and 133 Indian pilgrims [4].
Rescue crews are facing difficult terrain as they attempt to locate the missing. The combination of landslides and flooding has destroyed infrastructure, making the border region nearly inaccessible to standard emergency vehicles.

The contradiction in reports regarding a seismic trigger suggests a complex geological event, potentially involving a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF), which is an increasing risk in the Himalayas due to climate instability.
