A glacier collapse on the Nepal-China border triggered massive floods and mudslides that destroyed five hydroelectric plants and swept away entire villages [1, 2].

The disaster represents a catastrophic failure of infrastructure and a humanitarian crisis in a remote region where rescue operations are hampered by rugged terrain.

The floods occurred on Aug. 26 [2]. The resulting mudflow overwhelmed river valleys in the Raswa District of central Nepal and near Shigatse in Tibet [2]. In the aftermath, survivors described a rapid rise in water levels that engulfed homes and buildings instantly.

"I was sitting there watching the flood. The water level rose and rose, and it swallowed the house," Adhikari, 60, said [1].

Casualty figures have risen sharply as rescue efforts continue. While initial reports placed the death toll at 157 [2], later updates from TV Asahi indicate that 990 people have died [2]. The number of missing persons has also climbed significantly. Early reports cited more than 400 missing, including 391 foreigners [2], but more recent estimates suggest over 5,000 people remain unaccounted for [2].

Infrastructure damage is concentrated around the energy sector. More than 900 workers at hydroelectric plants are reported missing [1]. The scale of the destruction has left many structures unrecognizable.

"This entire area was swallowed by the muddy stream. Multiple buildings that were here were washed away, and many of the remaining buildings no longer retain their original shape," Seiichiro Kanai said [1].

In Tibet, Xinhua reported via TV Asahi that 265 people are missing [2]. Rescue teams are currently working to locate survivors amid the debris of the five destroyed plants and the surrounding residential areas [1, 2].
