Flash floods in Nepal have killed at least 157 people [1] and left hundreds of others missing across the region.
The disaster highlights the extreme vulnerability of Nepal's mountainous infrastructure during monsoon seasons, where sudden river surges can isolate entire communities in minutes.
In the Nuwakot district, a married couple, Saurabh and Salina, narrowly escaped the rushing waters. The couple was forced to seek refuge at a small tea shop after an old bridge was swept away by the current. Saurabh said he rushed out after receiving a phone call warning that a flood was imminent.
"The flood was right behind us. We just ran," Saurabh said.
The devastation was triggered by heavy rains that caused the Bhotekoshi River to overflow. The resulting surge inundated villages and destroyed critical transport links, leaving travelers and residents stranded in remote areas.
The scale of the tragedy extends beyond local residents. Around 400 tourists are reported missing, including U.S. citizens [1]. The disaster also crossed international borders, with reports from China indicating three dead and about 200 people missing [1].
Rescue efforts continue as teams struggle to reach cut-off areas. In Nuwakot, the loss of bridges has hampered the movement of emergency services, and the evacuation of those stranded at temporary shelters. The situation remains volatile as authorities work to account for the missing.
