Sony Santa Monica Studio has announced a new God of War game starring Kratos is currently in development [1, 2].
The announcement signals a continuation of the franchise's primary narrative arc, linking the legendary protagonist to newer characters in the series. This development ensures that Kratos remains the central figure of the brand even as the studio explores other perspectives.
Director Cory Barlog said the project during San Diego Comic-Con 2026 in California [3, 4]. The new title will serve as a direct sequel to the story established in God of War: Laufey [3, 5]. While the new Kratos game is officially in development, Sony has not yet provided a specific release date [3].
God of War: Laufey is slated for release in February 2027 [3, 6]. Barlog said that the new game will directly connect to the events of the Laufey game [7].
During the presentation, Barlog appeared surprised by his own reveal, saying, "Oh, f***, did I just announce the next Kratos game?" [8]. In other statements regarding the return of the character, Barlog said, "Kratos will return" [2].
The move to link the two titles suggests a tightly integrated storytelling approach for the next era of the franchise. By placing the Laufey game first, the studio is building a narrative bridge that leads back to Kratos's journey [5, 7].
“Kratos will return.”
This sequencing indicates that Sony is transitioning the God of War franchise into a multi-game narrative arc where the protagonist's return is dependent on the setup of a spin-off or companion title. By anchoring the new Kratos game to the events of God of War: Laufey, the studio is expanding the mythology beyond a single character's perspective while maintaining the commercial draw of the series' most famous lead.
