A red sports car struck a female anti-ICE protester from behind at the entrance of Delaney Hall in Newark, New Jersey.
The incident occurred during a Father's Day vigil on Sunday, June 16, 2024. The event highlights the ongoing tension between immigration activists and the operators of detention facilities, specifically regarding the treatment of detained parents.
Protesters gathered at the facility to demand the closure of the for-profit center and the release of detained fathers. The woman struck by the vehicle was waving an upside-down U.S. flag at the time of the collision. Dozens of agitators [1] were present at the scene.
Witnesses said the driver of the vehicle may have been an employee of the GEO Group, the company that manages the facility. Other reports on the incident do not identify the driver.
Following the event, five anti-ICE rioters [2] were arrested. The facility remains a focal point for those protesting the use of private corporations in the U.S. immigration detention system.
“A red sports car drove into the protester at the entrance of Delaney Hall ICE detention facility”
The collision at Delaney Hall underscores the volatility of protests surrounding private detention centers. By linking the incident to a Father's Day vigil, activists aim to humanize the impact of ICE detentions, while the arrests of five individuals suggest a tightening of security or a legal crackdown on the methods of protest at these specific sites.
