Novo Nordisk CEO Mike Doustdar said seniors on Medicare should use common sense to choose Wegovy as new drug coverage begins [1].
The push comes as the U.S. government prepares to expand access to GLP-1 medications, potentially altering the treatment landscape for obesity among the elderly. Increased accessibility could significantly raise the volume of prescriptions and impact public health outcomes for seniors managing weight-related conditions.
Doustdar said the comments during the American Diabetes Association’s 2026 Scientific Sessions. He said the company is preparing for the July 1, 2026 [1] start date of Medicare coverage for GLP-1 drugs.
"Common sense should drive seniors on Medicare to opt for Wegovy," Doustdar said [2].
Doustdar said the company wants seniors to make the right choice for their health as the coverage window opens [2]. Novo Nordisk believes the drug will improve health outcomes for obese seniors who have previously lacked affordable access to the medication.
Medicare's decision to cover GLP-1 drugs represents a shift in how the federal program addresses obesity, treating it as a primary medical condition rather than a lifestyle issue. The transition to coverage on July 1, 2026 [1], is expected to create a surge in demand for the obesity drug.
“"Common sense should drive seniors on Medicare to opt for Wegovy."”
The move to include GLP-1 drugs under Medicare coverage removes a significant financial barrier for the elderly, a demographic often plagued by comorbidities associated with obesity. By explicitly urging patients toward Wegovy, Novo Nordisk is positioning itself to capture a massive new market segment just as federal reimbursement begins, likely intensifying competition among pharmaceutical providers in the weight-loss sector.
