Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and BJP MP Sambit Patra reviewed the construction of the Jagannath Rath Yatra chariots on June 15, 2026.
The inspection ensures that the traditional vehicles are completed on schedule for one of India's most significant religious festivals. Any delay in the construction of the chariots could disrupt the timing of the festival and the movement of millions of devotees.
The review took place at the Jagannath Temple premises in Puri. Officials focused on the progress of the three chariots [1] currently being built for the 2026 festival. According to reports, the construction is progressing as per schedule [2].
Majhi said, "We are closely monitoring the chariot construction to ensure everything is perfect and ready for the 2026 Rath Yatra."
The construction process had picked up pace as of mid-June, with approximately one month remaining until the start of the Rath Yatra [1]. The process involves strict adherence to traditional methods of building the massive wooden structures.
Patra said, "The tradition of the Rath Yatra lives on, and we are proud to see the chariots taking shape on schedule."
The state government is coordinating with temple authorities to manage the logistics of the event. This includes overseeing the artisans who carve and assemble the chariots within the temple complex, a process that requires precise timing and coordination.
“We are closely monitoring the chariot construction to ensure everything is perfect”
The high-level involvement of the Chief Minister and a prominent MP underscores the cultural and political importance of the Rath Yatra in Odisha. By conducting formal reviews of the chariot construction, the state government aims to mitigate the risk of logistical failures that could impact public order and the religious experience of millions of pilgrims.
