Congress MP Jebi Mather said the INDIA alliance will oppose any move by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to recognize rebel lawmakers as a separate bloc.

The decision carries significant weight for the stability of the opposition coalition and the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). If the Speaker grants the request, it could weaken the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and shift the parliamentary balance of power toward the ruling coalition.

Approximately 20 rebel TMC MPs [1] and some Shiv Sena (UBT) lawmakers have approached Speaker Om Birla. These lawmakers have submitted a letter seeking recognition as a separate bloc within the NDA [1]. Other reports indicate the rebel MPs may be seeking a merger with the NCPI to navigate the anti-defection law [2].

This political maneuvering comes ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. As part of the process, Speaker Birla summoned Abhishek Banerjee on June 19, 2024 [3] to discuss the merger bid.

The TMC has reacted to these developments by stating that the rebel lawmakers should resign from their seats before joining the BJP. However, the rebel group continues to seek a formal mechanism to align with the ruling coalition without triggering the anti-defection law's penalties.

Congress MP Jebi Mather said the INDIA alliance intends to protect constitutional values. Mather said the alliance would challenge any decision that undermines these principles in favor of political expediency. The situation remains tense as the Speaker weighs the legal requirements for bloc recognition against the political pressure from both the government and the opposition.

The INDIA alliance will oppose any move that undermines constitutional values.

This dispute centers on the interpretation of the anti-defection law, which prevents lawmakers from switching parties without losing their seats. By seeking a 'separate bloc' or a merger with a smaller party like the NCPI, the rebel MPs are attempting to legally migrate to the NDA without resigning. A ruling in their favor by the Speaker would provide a blueprint for other opposition dissidents to defect, potentially eroding the INDIA alliance's numerical strength in the Lok Sabha.
