Red Barrels has released a cinematic trailer for Season 7: Project Boneyard, a new content update for the survival-co-op horror game The Outlast Trials.

This update expands the game's narrative and gameplay mechanics to maintain player engagement through new environmental challenges and enemy types. By introducing a high-security prison setting, the developer aims to increase the difficulty and atmospheric tension for the player base.

The update introduces the Sinyala Facility, a prison-like environment where players must navigate new hazards [1, 2]. Along with the new setting, the update adds two new MK-Challenges designed to test experienced players [1]. A new enemy, known as "The Biter," will also be introduced to the game's roster [1].

"We’re thrilled to bring players back to the terrifying world of The Outlast Trials with Season 7’s brand-new Sinyala Facility and the terrifying new enemy, The Biter," a Red Barrels spokesperson said [1].

The cinematic trailer, shared on the developer's YouTube channel, provides a first look at the prison-themed trials. The expansion focuses on increasing the stakes for "Reagents," the term used for the game's playable characters.

"Season 7 sends you straight to a maximum-security prison, and the new MK-Challenges will test even the most seasoned Reagents," Linda Güster said [2].

Season 7: Project Boneyard is scheduled to launch on July 14, 2024 [1].

"Season 7 sends you straight to a maximum-security prison"

The release of Project Boneyard indicates Red Barrels' strategy of utilizing seasonal content drops to extend the lifecycle of The Outlast Trials. By shifting the setting to a maximum-security prison and introducing specialized challenges, the developer is pivoting toward higher-difficulty content to retain a veteran player base that may have exhausted the initial game loop.
