Eleven members of the National Action Party (PAN) in León, Guanajuato, have resigned from the party over the last two months [3].
This wave of departures signals a deepening internal crisis for the party in one of its key strongholds, as high-ranking municipal officials align themselves with the mayor's exit.
The resignations include two municipal directors, specifically those leading the Municipal Youth Institute (IMJU) and Social Development [1], along with nine party militants [2]. These departures follow the resignation of Mayor Alejandra Gutiérrez Campos (PAN), who left the party after 20 years of membership [4].
Those leaving the party said the PAN no longer represents their values and has lost its way. Some officials said internal excesses and the abandonment of the party's core causes were primary motivations for their exit.
"The PAN has lost its way," the resigning members said.
Other municipal directors said the party no longer represents their values. The shift reflects a broader trend of instability within the local party structure since the mayor's announcement.
Alejandra Gutiérrez Campos previously addressed the internal climate of the organization. "We denounce the excesses within the party," Gutiérrez Campos said.
The total of 11 resignations [3] represents a coordinated departure of both administrative leadership and grassroots support in León. The loss of two key directors [1] may impact the party's ability to maintain its influence over municipal social and youth programming in the region.
“"The PAN has lost its way,"”
The exodus of municipal directors and militants following the mayor's departure suggests a collapse of local party discipline. When a sitting mayor and her subordinates leave a party simultaneously, it creates a power vacuum and weakens the party's leverage in municipal governance, potentially shifting the political balance in Guanajuato.
