The 59th edition [1] of the Parintins Folklore Festival began this week in the Bumbódromo of Parintins, Amazonas, Brazil.
This competition is a cornerstone of Amazonian cultural identity, pitting two rival groups against one another to preserve regional folklore and determine a champion.
While the main competition is scheduled for June 26, 27, and 28 [2], the festivities began earlier this month. A formal opening ceremony took place on Friday, June 20 [3]. During that event, singer Simone Mendes said, "É uma honra lançar o 59º Festival de Parintins" [4].
The event centers on the rivalry between two bois-bumbás: Caprichoso and Garantido [5]. These groups compete over three nights [6] of performances. To determine the winner, judges evaluate the groups across 21 specific items [7].
The scale of the festival has attracted significant commercial interest. According to Meio & Mensagem, the festival features 17 sponsoring brands [8]. This corporate backing supports the massive production required for the Bumbódromo performances.
Local atmosphere remains high as the event progresses. A report from Rede Globo – Rede Amazônica said that the Tupinambarana island began to be taken over by the contagious mood of the festival on June 20 [9]. The competition continues through Sunday, June 28 [2].
“The 59th edition of the event features a three-night battle between the Caprichoso and Garantido bois-bumbás.”
The Parintins Folklore Festival serves as more than a local competition; it is a major economic and cultural driver for the Amazonas region. By integrating 17 corporate sponsors into a traditional folk rivalry, the event demonstrates how indigenous-rooted traditions in Brazil are scaled into professional spectacles that attract international attention and tourism.
