Toronto city councillor Parthi Kandavel announced Sunday that he is the subject of an Ontario Provincial Police investigation [1, 2].
The disclosure comes as the city prepares for the 2026 municipal election [1], creating uncertainty regarding the future of the representative for Scarborough Southwest.
Kandavel, who represents Ward 20, shared the news through an Instagram post on May 10 [2, 3]. While he confirmed the existence of the probe, he did not specify the nature of the allegations against him [1, 2, 3].
"I’m surprised to learn about the OPP investigation," Kandavel said [2].
He said that he would cooperate with the authorities but declined to provide further details on the matter. "I can’t share what the allegations are, but I will cooperate fully with the police," Kandavel said [1].
Kandavel first entered office after winning a byelection for the Ward 20 seat in 2023 [1]. He has since maintained that his conduct in office has been beyond reproach.
"I've strived to maintain the highest standards of ethics and integrity and will address any allegations that suggest otherwise," Kandavel said [1].
The councillor did not confirm whether he intends to seek re-election in the upcoming 2026 municipal vote [1]. The Ontario Provincial Police have not released a statement regarding the specific focus of the investigation.
“"I’m surprised to learn about the OPP investigation."”
The timing of this investigation is critical as it coincides with the lead-up to the 2026 municipal elections. Because the nature of the allegations remains undisclosed, the political impact on Ward 20 depends on whether the probe involves official misconduct or personal matters, potentially influencing voter sentiment and the candidate field in Scarborough Southwest.
