A partial lunar eclipse will be visible across Canada and much of North America on the night of August 27-28 [1], NASA said [3].

At the maximum point of the eclipse, approximately 93% of the Moon's diameter will move inside the umbra [2]. The umbra is the dark, central part of Earth's shadow. Because such a high percentage of the Moon will be obscured, the event will appear nearly total to the naked eye.
This phenomenon often results in what is commonly called a "blood moon." The reddish or coppery hue occurs because sunlight is filtered through Earth's atmosphere [4]. This process scatters shorter wavelengths of light, while allowing red light to pass through and reflect off the lunar surface [4].
Observers in various time zones across North America will be able to witness the event. The eclipse coincides with the full Sturgeon Moon, adding to the visibility of the night sky [2].
NASA said the partial eclipse will take place later this week [3]. Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses can be viewed safely without specialized eyewear. The event will also provide a backdrop for viewing other celestial bodies, including Saturn [5].
