Congress leader Pawan Khera appeared for questioning by the Assam Crime Branch in Guwahati and has been summoned again for May 25, 2024 [1].
The case represents a significant legal clash between a high-ranking opposition figure and the family of Assam's sitting chief minister. Because the allegations involve forgery and criminal conduct, the outcome could influence the political climate in the region.
Khera was questioned for a second day [2] regarding a forgery and criminal case filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma [3]. The investigation is being conducted by the Assam Crime Branch in Guwahati.
Khera said he is cooperating with the probe and intends to continue doing so [4]. Despite the ongoing investigation, he declined to comment on the specific allegations involving the chief minister's wife.
The legal proceedings have extended to the Guwahati High Court, where the court reserved its order on Khera's application for anticipatory bail [5]. Khera's defense team said the allegations are politically motivated [6].
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken a different view of the situation. Sarma said Khera should surrender in Guwahati [7].
“Pawan Khera said he is cooperating with the probe and intends to continue doing so.”
This legal battle highlights the deepening friction between the Indian National Congress and the ruling administration in Assam. The use of criminal forgery charges involving a spouse of a high-ranking official, coupled with a fight over anticipatory bail, suggests a high-stakes confrontation where legal maneuvers are inextricably linked to political rivalry.
