A 22-year-old [1] Penn State student died Saturday after being shot in the chest near his home in South Philadelphia.
The killing of a college senior in a residential neighborhood highlights the volatile nature of street confrontations and the risks associated with attempted property recovery.
Billy Schmidt, also identified as William Schmidt, was found lying in the road on the 1900 block of Durfor Street [3]. The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. [2] on Saturday.
Reports indicate that Schmidt was confronting men who had stolen his phone at the time of the shooting. During the encounter, Schmidt said, "Give me back my phone!" [4].
Other accounts of the evening suggest Schmidt was walking home after watching the NBA finals, though those reports did not specify a motive for the violence. The victim was shot once in the chest and died from his injuries.
Police have not yet released the identities of the suspects involved in the shooting. The 1900 block of Durfor Street remained a crime scene as investigators worked to determine the sequence of events leading to the fatal encounter.
“"Give me back my phone!"”
This incident underscores the lethal risks involved in confronting individuals during the commission of a robbery. The discrepancy between reports—one citing a phone theft and another mentioning the victim returning from a sporting event—suggests an evolving police investigation into the exact catalyst of the violence.
