The annual Perseid meteor shower will peak Wednesday night, Aug. 12, into Thursday morning, Aug. 13 [1, 2].
This year's event is particularly significant because it coincides with a solar eclipse and a rare alignment of six planets, creating a dense cluster of astronomical activity for observers in the Northern Hemisphere [1, 2].
The Perseids occur when Earth passes through debris left by comet Swift-Tuttle [1, 4]. As these particles enter the atmosphere, they burn up and create the bright streaks of light known as shooting stars [1, 4]. The Canadian Space Agency calls this “the best meteor shower of the year” [2].
Adding to the spectacle, a solar eclipse will occur the same night as the peak [1, 2]. While reports on the eclipse vary, with some describing it as partial [2] and others as total [1], the path of totality is expected to run across Spain, Iceland, and Greenland [1, 3]. Additionally, a six-planet parade will be visible in the sky [1].
Astronomers suggest that the best viewing will occur after the eclipse's totality [3]. To get the best view, observers should find a dark location away from city lights.
“Pick a patch of sky and let your eyes adjust for about half an hour before you start watching,” Jeff Vanderbosch, a senior astronomer with the American Meteor Society, said [1].
Vanderbosch said that patience is key to spotting the meteors, as the eyes need time to adapt to the darkness to see the fainter streaks of light [1].
