Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bhogapuram International Airport in the Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday.

The opening of the facility marks a significant expansion of India's aviation infrastructure, intended to increase international access and stimulate economic growth within the state.

Also referred to as the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport, the project was developed with a total cost of Rs 5,000 crore [1]. The Prime Minister was joined by the Andhra Pradesh chief minister for the ceremony, signaling a coordinated effort between the central government and the state administration to advance the region's development agenda.

The airport is designed to serve as a primary gateway for the state, reducing reliance on existing hubs and providing a modern facility for both commercial and cargo operations. By placing the hub in the Vizianagaram district, the government aims to distribute infrastructure benefits across the state, creating new opportunities for trade and tourism.

Officials said the project is part of a broader strategy to enhance the state's transport network and attract further private investment. The facility is expected to streamline travel for residents and business travelers, connecting the region more efficiently to global markets.

Bhogapuram is positioned to act as a catalyst for urban development in the surrounding areas. The investment in this international hub is intended to complement other ongoing infrastructure projects in Andhra Pradesh, fostering a more integrated transport ecosystem that supports the state's long-term economic goals.

The project was developed with a total cost of Rs 5,000 crore.

The establishment of a new international airport in Vizianagaram shifts the aviation gravity of Andhra Pradesh, potentially decentralizing economic activity away from traditional urban centers. By investing Rs 5,000 crore into high-capacity infrastructure, the government is betting on increased foreign direct investment and a surge in regional tourism to justify the expenditure.
