Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) party, following the party's strong performance in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
The result marks a significant shift in the state's political landscape, as a debut party has disrupted the traditional dominance of established political forces.
Modi praised the party's "impressive performance" on Monday evening as counting began [1]. He said that TVK emerged as the single largest party in the assembly, securing approximately 106 seats [2]. While the party has not yet reached the majority mark of 118 seats in the 234-seat assembly, its seat count positions it as a primary power broker [2].
"I congratulate Vijay and his party TVK for their impressive performance in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections," Modi said [1].
The Prime Minister also used the occasion to thank the voters of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Tamil Nadu for their support [2]. He said the party's debut was part of the ruling coalition's broader development agenda for the state [2].
The electoral shift coincided with losses for other major figures. Chief Minister MK Stalin lost his seat in Kolathur [3].
"TVK has emerged as the single largest party with 106 seats," Modi said [2].
Other political leaders have also acknowledged the shift. Rahul Gandhi spoke to Vijay following the results, and also spoke with Stalin [1].
“TVK has emerged as the single largest party with 106 seats.”
The emergence of TVK as the single largest party suggests a volatility in Tamil Nadu's voting patterns and a willingness among the electorate to pivot toward new leadership. By securing 106 seats, TVK has effectively neutralized the absolute dominance of previous incumbents, forcing a new era of coalition building where the party's support is essential for any stable government.
