Pokemon GO Fest 2026 began today in Tokyo's Odaiba area, attracting thousands of players from Japan, the U.S., and the UK [1].
The event marks the 10th anniversary of the augmented reality game and aims to boost tourism and urban engagement across the city [1, 4].
Organizers scheduled the festival to run for four days, concluding on June 1, 2026 [2, 3, 4]. While the primary crowds gathered at Odaiba Seaside Park, the event also spans locations within the Minato, Koto, and Shinagawa wards [3, 4].
High temperatures challenged attendees on the opening day. Odaiba recorded a maximum temperature of 33.3 °C [5], while Fuchu in the Tokyo prefecture reached 33.7 °C [5]. The heat led some participants to seek immediate relief through cold treats to avoid illness.
"It is hotter than I imagined," said one attendee. "I have to buy shaved ice immediately to cool down, otherwise I am worried about my health" [5].
Despite the weather, the event drew families from across the country. One attendee who traveled from Nagano Prefecture said they came because the event only happens once a year [5]. Another visitor from Ibaraki Prefecture said their entire family has played the game for more than 10 years [5].
Niantic, the game's developer, designed the festival to integrate digital gameplay with physical exploration of Tokyo's waterfront and urban centers [1, 4].
“The event marks the 10th anniversary of the augmented reality game.”
The scale of Pokemon GO Fest 2026 demonstrates the enduring global appeal of augmented reality gaming a decade after its launch. By partnering with city wards and focusing on high-traffic tourist zones like Odaiba, Niantic is leveraging 'location-based entertainment' to drive significant international foot traffic and economic activity into Tokyo's urban infrastructure.
