Politico announced in March 2024 that its Playbook newsletter will now feature a dedicated editor and four regular authors [1].
This restructuring aims to stabilize the editorial voice of one of the most influential newsletters in U.S. politics. The changes come amid internal and external scrutiny regarding the publication's guest authorship policies and editorial direction.
Mike Zapler has been appointed as the dedicated Playbook editor. The regular author lineup includes journalists Tara Palmeri, Rachael Bade, Eugene Daniels, and Ryan Lizza [1]. Palmeri said, "I want to bring some of the old Playbook back."
The organizational shift follows a period of controversy involving guest author Ben Shapiro. Editor-in-chief Matt Kaminski and other leadership figures said they defended Shapiro's contribution to the newsletter [2].
Kaminski said, "We stand by Ben Shapiro’s contribution to the Playbook newsletter" [2]. Despite internal concerns regarding the appearance, Kaminski said that there will be no apology [2].
The decision to maintain a fixed team of four authors [1] is intended to strengthen the newsletter's structure. By centering the publication around a dedicated editor, Politico seeks to balance its tradition of insider reporting with a more consistent editorial framework.
“"There will be no such apology."”
The move to a dedicated editorial team suggests Politico is attempting to institutionalize the Playbook brand to reduce volatility. By formalizing the author roster while simultaneously refusing to apologize for controversial guest contributors, the publication is signaling a commitment to a broader ideological range of voices, even at the risk of internal friction.
